Acmena provides safety in design and systems safety support to a national supply and distribution network.

Challenge

Acmena was approached by an Australian organisation to help improve its company-wide Safety in Design (SiD) capability. The business is comprised of various operating units across an expansive supply chain including warehousing, transport and distribution centres, each with varied practices in safety engineering. The initiative aimed to reduce safety risks and improve oversight across its operations supply chain and ensure compliance with the WHS Act 2011. Acmena was engaged to analyse current practices and provide actionable recommendations to standardise and improve safety across the organisation.

Approach

Acmena conducted a series of structured workshops across several business units. Current processes, governance frameworks and technical documentation were assessed from a systems safety perspective. A cross-industry benchmark study was also undertaken to identify proven strategies in risk management, change control and stakeholder coordination. The analysis focused on highlighting areas where safety processes could be improved, also where technical capability may be lacking and where reliance on vendors could create exposure.

Outcome

Acmena developed targeted recommendations to improve the client’s SiD capability and provide a practical roadmap to implement them. This included recommendations to increase safety by:

  • Improving supply chain engagement and the management of non-delegable duties and the delegation of tasks.
  • Developing a common framework to manage safety in design and WHS compliance.
  • Identifying gaps and inconsistencies to be resolved in the risk governance process.
  • Standardising a scalable SiD process and system safety approach.
